Damon
Thursday morning, Damon was visited again by Igor.
âHave you got yourself a date yet?â the old man asked.
Damon smiled at him and said, âAs a matter of fact, I do.â
âIs she legitimate, or is she some kind of floozy you are going to pick up at the last minute?â Igor asked, clearly having something on his mind.
Damon winced, though he knew the elder meant no disrespect. âShe is an actual person who is important to me. I think she might be my fated mate.â
Hearing the words fall from his mouth shocked him. It was the first time he had said them aloud to anyone other than Leonard.
Igor sat back in his chair and steeped his fingers. âWow. Iâm surprised to hear those words coming out of your mouth. Fated mate, huh? Well, Iâm happy for you.â
Igor started to get up to leave, but Damon stopped him. âIs that all you came for? To find out if I had a date?â
âActually, yes,â the old man said. âMy niece is in town from London, and I thought she could be your date if you just had some random dame set up to attend with you.â
âYou were trying to play matchmaker?â Damon asked him.
Igor shrugged, pretending to be innocent. âI donât know.â Then, he studied Damon seriously. âWhat happened to your father after your mother was killed was a damned tragedy. Your father was a terrific man who was well respected by everyone. Yet, what happened to him doesnât mean it would happen to you. I know you are terrified. Your father was always a passionate man. He put a hundred percent of himself into everything he did, and especially everyone he loved. It was all or nothing for him. When he lost your mother, he went from all to nothing. You have your mother in you. She was a kind, wonderful, gentle person. She also had all of the logical sense in the family.â
Damon just looked at him. He didnât know what to say.
âDonât run away from love because you are afraid you have too much of your father in you. Run toward love because you have a lot of your mother in you,â Igor said.
With those sage words of advice, the old man stood and headed out the door. âI look forward to meeting her,â he said, and then he left Damon alone with his thoughts.
Lately, Damon had been doing everything in his power to avoid his thoughts. He was afraid that he was legitimately losing his mind. He had agonized over the upcoming event. The part of him that knew she was his fated mate made him long to hold her in his arms. The part that was terrified of losing her made him dread going to the event with her. He had no idea how he was going to hold her at armâs length when she was going to be his date.
On their way to Ava's apartment that night, he said, âYou need to take tomorrow off. Iâll make arrangements with your boss, and Iâll pay you for your time.
